What Is Show Jacket
Horse show jackets are specialized jackets worn by riders during horse shows. These jackets are specially designed for riders to look professional and elegant while competing in events such as dressage, show jumping, and other equestrian events. Horse show jackets are typically made of wool, tweed, or a synthetic material, and are tailored to be fitted and streamlined to the rider's body. They come in a range of colors, including black, navy, dark green, and burgundy, and are typically accessorized with a stock tie or silk scarf. Most horse show jackets also have a number of functional features, such as pockets for storing competition numbers and horse treats, and ventilation panels to keep the rider cool during long hours of competition.

How To Select The Right Show Jacket
When you are choosing a competition jacket consider which disciplines you compete in. There are three main types of jackets available

Tweed
Tweeds are also known as hacking jackets and are traditionally worn out hunting before the season’s opening meet. This type of jacket is also worn for many showing classes and for the lower levels of eventing.
This classic country style of jacket is made from either pure wool or a wool blend. It’s cut to give a flattering tailored fit. This style of coat usually has double rear vents and three buttons down the front.
Other detailing can include a velvet collar and pocket flaps.
Shorter jackets are popular for showjumping.

Showjumping
The style of jacket most often seen in the showjumping arena is slightly shorter than a tweed jacket and may have three or four buttons down the front.
They are typically made of breathable, lightweight, stretchy fabrics and often don’t have a lining. This type of material provides a great range of movement — just what’s needed when you’re showjumping.
For a neater appearance, these jackets can have a front zip hidden behind the buttons and other features such as mesh panels to aid breathability.

Dressage
Dressage styles are changing in favour of stretch materials for greater comfort
A dressage jacket is usually a little longer than a showjumping jacket. Again, modern materials are being used for a more comfortable fit.
Subtle style touches can be added, such as contrast colour collar and a hint of bling. There are also some different styles available, such as a cut-away jacket.
How To Care For Your Competition Show Jacket
Be sure to read the label instructions before cleaning your show jacket. Many show jackets sold today are machine washable, however, some have special needs and instructions for detergent used. If you are washing your show jacket with another laundry, we recommend putting your show jacket in a lingerie bag or a pillowcase to keep it safe from accidentally snagging on other items in the wash cycle. Remove promptly, button/zip the front, and hang to air dry. Once dry, store it in your show jacket bag in a climate-controlled environment, like your home. The best way to keep your show jacket looking like new is to keep it out of direct sunlight and away from extreme heat.
If you’ve found a show jacket that meets all the fit points - congrats! You've found the perfect show jacket for you! If you are struggling with any of the fit points it is always good to try different styles within a brand as well as a variety of different brands. Fit can vary a little by style and brand, many brands also offer options such as long, short, slim. Some even offer an endowed cut. There may be a wait for such customized options, but the patience will be well worth it for the perfect fit.
Selecting Your Perfect Show Jacket
Each English riding discipline has its own rules and traditions concerning show coat suitability, and our expertly trained staff can help riders select the appropriate coat style and fit for their competition requirements. We are pleased to offer a wide selection of show coats including traditional hunter coats, modern jumper jackets.
Thanks to the high-powered dynamics of show jumping, jumper jackets feature 4 button fronts and shorter, more tailored fits. Bright colors are acceptable for jumper riders, and many riders sport jackets adorned with crystals, piping, and shiny accents.
Dressage riders may now wear bespoke dressage coats in an array of colors to highlight their personal style. Fancy embellishments are now allowed, and many dressage coats feature glittering crystals and stylized buttons. Dressage shadbellys, worn for the higher levels of dressage are more formal and feature dressage tails that are weighted down to lay still against the horse.

How Should a Show Jacket Fit
A well-fitting show jacket should give you a tailored look, but not be uncomfortable. Back when fabrics were made from wool and wool blends, show jackets were snug and did not allow for much freedom of movement. Thanks to advances in textile technology, show jackets are now made from glorious fabrics with stretch. These fabrics offer that fitted tailored look while not restricting movement. That said there are some things to look out for with these tech fabrics.
The shoulders of the show jacket should be snug, but not restrictive. If the shoulders are too big, the show jacket will hang like a box, too tight and it will pucker and bulge in the most unattractive of ways.
Broad shoulders or those who are well endowed may need to go up a size for a good fit with the possibility of needing to have the waist and/or sleeves taken in by a local seamstress. Cross-check the look in a mirror by crossing your arms over your chest and hugging yourself.
The torso of the show jacket should lie closed and smooth against the body, without wrinkles, pulling, or bulging. Your natural waistline should be fit in line with the show jacket's silhouette. Using the 3rd button as a guide, it should sit at your belly button. If the button is higher or lower, you may need to try a short or tall show jacket so that the silhouette is sharp and the silhouette is perfect. Stretch fabric show jackets often have a hidden zipper front with a button-over closure. This allows for a closer more tailored fit without sacrificing the classic button upfront.
The sleeves (with your arms hanging loosely at your sides) should end at the tip of your wrist bone. There should be 2-3 inches between the end of the sleeve and your hand.
What Characterises A Show Jacket
Show jackets are breathable jackets made from soft, light materials such as cotton, polypropylene, microfibres or softshell fabric. The materials, which are manufactured in diligent fashion, cause the rider to perspire less so she or he can concentrate fully on the horse and the tournament. With competition jackets of this kind, wearing comfort is an utmost priority. Its elastane portion ensures that the show jacket is an optimum fit for the rider’s body, which guarantees an all-round aesthetic impression. In general, competition jackets are characterised by their ability to exude elegance and give the rider's performance the final touch.
