What Is A Show Coat?

Mar 29, 2025

An equestrian show coat is a custom jacket worn by riders at equestrian shows and competitions. It is designed to provide an elegant and professional look while riding. The Show coat features a fitted fit, three or four button closures, and a split back panel. Formal equestrian competitions require the wearing of a performance jacket to keep the tradition and showcased.

Display coats are often made of high-tech synthetic fabrics, such as microfiber, soft shell, and mesh. These fabrics provide stretch and movement while riding, as well as provide temperature control to keep you cool in hot weather. These technical fabrics are machine washable, wrinkle-resistant, odor-resistant, and sometimes water-resistant.

Originally, show coats were made of heavyweight wool to keep fox hunters warm, dry, and protected while galloping through thistles, shrubs, and brush. These coats were well-tailored and made to order and were much longer than show coats used today.

Display outerwearWith the development of equestrian sports, there is a clear need for reasonably priced, easy-to-carry performance clothing. Performance coats are now machine-made and come in a variety of colors, styles, and cuts to meet the needs of multiple equestrian disciplines.

Show coat sizing often depends on where the coat was made due to variations in sizing standards and body proportions across different regions. When shopping for show coats, read up on the brand's location and check the sizing charts to know what sizes will work for you.
